The UN, with all its growing challenges in our complex world remains a focal institution for those who crave to make the world a better place.

Building on these natural hopes, many people from around the world aspire to connect with and even work for the United Nations. But how to do this? Where to begin? What to look for? What is required?

This short video reviews the UN’s requirements for interns and provides information for links and places to get the details. You can watch it here or on YouTube.

Internship_Opportunities_at_Mission_of_Armenia_to_the_UN___Asbarez_Armenian_NewsRemember, the UN is not an academic institution per se, even though it requires its interns to be currently in a Masters of PhD program. However  interns will not necessarily get credit for interning there (that depends upon the school you are already enrolled in.) BUT those who succeed and get an internship then have it on their resume. You won’t get paid, and yes, you will have to make all the necessary arrangements. The UN after all, is an intergovernmental body.

Want to know exactly what the UN is? That’s a whole other question. But in so far as understanding exactly what you will get and what it is that you will GIVE to the UN by being an intern, take a few minutes to watch this video. And GOOD LUCK!

When you want to really understand the UN, not just academically (though that is included) but from the perspective of the activist, wanting to make the best use of walking the UN’s corridors, don’t forget to take our premier “Advocacy Algorithm.”  This video (provided by the NGO Academy) reviews the key information you need to understand and where to find it.

Remember, UN internships are tightly contested so this is something you will really need to give some attention to.

Plus there are other ways “in” such as through the 193 mission to the UN. If you are from one of the member nations and happen to live in NY, give them a call!

And it’s not uncommon for NGO leaders to start their work life as UN staffers and beginning as UN intern is often what gets them in the door. What’s more, having spent time as an intern, activists get some important insights as to how to work better with the UN. But there are many “doorways” to international peace work. This is one of them.

The vision of the UN touches us all. The reality of this at times cumbersome institution is where our vision “touches down” with today’s global realities. While that may test our patience at time, still, the enormity of “global change” will require that of any and all of us.

For NGO activists wanting to get to work faster, well, that’s what the NGO Academy’s Advocacy Algorithm is for!
